How does one attach those clip on hair extensions like Paris wears. It's all one length-yet hers is short

I've seen how they part your hair and somehow those clips clip it in so it lays flat against your head but that's assuming your hair goes over it to cover up the part that's attached. But some of these pictures I see --- like Paris Hilton and others it's all one length --- there's no shorter style on top - like a layered look or whatever that would cover it up.
